Social media platform X is moving to expand its financial services by introducing a feature that delivers real-time information on crypto assets and stocks.
According to Cointelegraph on the 12th (local time), Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said in a post that the company plans to roll out the “Smart Cashtags” feature next month. The feature will provide real-time price moves for crypto assets and stocks, while also showing recent mention volumes by asset and the related news flow.
Bier said the crypto component is designed to allow access to smart-contract information linked to tokens. A “Mentions” section will be added for each asset, surfacing recent discussions around the asset along with updates related to companies and project teams. A concept screenshot released also included a screen hinting at in-app transaction functionality, fueling expectations that in-app trading could be introduced down the road.
He said, “X is the most important source of financial news, and hundreds of billions of dollars are managed based on what people read here,” adding that the company plans to gather user feedback ahead of the full launch in February. The market is watching whether the feature can strengthen X’s role as a financial information hub.
Integrating financial functions is seen as a core pillar of Elon Musk’s “Everything App” vision, which he has pursued since acquiring X in October 2022. Observers say it marks a step toward a more concrete strategy to expand beyond social media into a payments, finance, and information platform.
