Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin will deploy about $45 million worth of Ethereum into open-source security and privacy projects.

According to digital asset news outlet The Block on the 30th (Korea time), Buterin said via X (formerly Twitter) that he would withdraw 16,384 ETH and directly support the development of security technologies spanning open-source software and hardware.

The investment comes as the Ethereum Foundation has moved into a posture of “moderate tightening” to ensure long-term sustainability. Buterin described it as a “contribution separate from the foundation’s tightening,” adding that he would personally take charge of certain special projects.

The funds are expected to be used across finance, telecommunications, governance, operating systems (OS), security hardware and healthcare.

“Ethereum is core infrastructure for openness and verifiability,” Buterin said, adding that the Ethereum Foundation will focus on “Ethereum for those who need it” rather than “Ethereum everywhere.”
