U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly set to visit Beijing, China, in the first week of April to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

On the 9th (local time), Politico, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that “President Trump plans to visit Beijing in the first week of April to attend a summit with President Xi Jinping.”

Trump had previously promised a China visit in April following a leaders’ meeting held in South Korea last fall, but the White House has yet to officially announce the exact dates. A White House official said, “The schedule is currently being coordinated and has not been finalized.”

Trump and Xi held a phone call last week and were said to have discussed a wide range of issues, including trade matters and major international disputes. The Taiwan issue was mentioned in particular during the call—an item that was not publicly addressed at the meeting held in South Korea last October.

As a result, there is growing speculation that the Taiwan issue could emerge as one of the key points of contention at the summit. With U.S.-China trade frictions and geopolitical tensions continuing, the upcoming summit could affect not only bilateral ties but also global financial markets and the broader diplomatic environment.
