According to industry sources on the 13th (Korea time), 22 bitcoins (BTC) that the Seoul Gangnam Police Station had been holding during an investigation were leaked outside.
The Gangnam Police Station had been keeping the 22 bitcoins after receiving them during the course of an investigation around November 2021. As of this day, the amount is worth 2.1 billion won.
It was reported that because the case had been in a suspended investigation status, the authorities had been unable to verify whether the virtual assets (cryptocurrencies) had been leaked.
The USB-type storage device (cold wallet) used to store the bitcoins remained in place, but it was confirmed that only the coins stored on it had been transferred out.
The Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency has opened an internal probe into the Gangnam Police Station to determine how the leak occurred and whether there was any internal involvement.
Previously, an incident occurred at the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office in which 320.88 bitcoins (worth about 40 billion won) held in custody were stolen through phishing. Subsequently, during an inspection of virtual-asset custody conditions across investigative agencies nationwide, the loss at the Gangnam station was identified.
