Amid a string of bitcoin losses… Ki Young Ju points out: “U.S. law enforcement has lost 0”
Summary
- Ju said the U.S. government has seized 198,000 bitcoins while losing none.
- By contrast, he noted the South Korean government seized 2,333 bitcoins and lost 1,742 of them, adding that someone accessed the private key during the investigation.
- He cited recent cases including the leak of 22 bitcoins from the Seoul Gangnam Police Station and the phishing theft of 320.88 bitcoins from the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office.

Ki Young Ju, CEO of CryptoQuant, criticized South Korean investigative authorities’ system for seizing and managing custody of virtual assets (cryptocurrencies).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the 14th (Korea time), Ju said, “While the U.S. government has seized 198,000 bitcoins (BTC) and lost 0, the South Korean government seized 2,333 and lost 1,742 of them.”
He added, “Someone accessed the private key during the investigation and took the funds,” and asked, “Who do you think did it?”
Ju’s remarks come after reports that bitcoins kept in custody by investigative bodies such as prosecutors and police have been leaking out in a series of incidents.
The day before, it was revealed that 22 bitcoins held by the Seoul Gangnam Police Station had been leaked externally. The bitcoins had been stored in a USB-form storage device (a cold wallet), but the device remained while only the virtual assets were taken, according to reports.
Previously, an incident also occurred at the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office, where 320.88 bitcoins in custody were stolen in a phishing scam.
