US retail sales fell 0.2% from the previous month last month, coming in above market expectations.

The US Department of Commerce said on the 6th (local time) that US retail sales in January declined 0.2% m/m. The figure was 0.1 percentage point above economists’ forecast (-0.3%).

On a year-on-year basis, retail sales rose 3.2%.

The monthly US retail sales report is an advance estimate that primarily tracks merchandise sales within total consumption. It is seen as a gauge of shifts in consumer spending, a key pillar of the US economy.
