U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if Iran disrupts crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the United States would launch a far stronger military response.
On the 9th (local time), Trump said on his Truth Social platform, "If Iran takes any action to block the flow of oil in the Strait of Hormuz, it will be hit 20 times harder than ever before."
He added, "The United States will strike targets that can be easily destroyed to the point that Iran would struggle to rebuild as a nation," warning that "death, fire and fury will come upon them." He added, however, that he "hopes that does not happen."
Trump also argued that keeping the Strait of Hormuz oil shipping lane open is a measure that benefits countries that depend on the route, including China.
The remarks are seen as Washington signaling a hardline stance after Iran raised the possibility of controlling the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
