The United States is said to be pushing to form a multinational maritime escort coalition to protect vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

On the 15th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing U.S. government officials, reported that “the Trump administration plans to announce as early as this week a coalition involving multiple countries to escort ships in the Strait of Hormuz, located along Iran’s coastline.”

However, when the operation would actually begin is still under discussion. Officials said deliberations are ongoing over whether to launch the mission before the current military conflict ends or to implement it after the war is over.

The White House offered no official comment on plans for an announcement. Government officials said the timing and details could also change depending on wartime conditions.

Meanwhile, some countries are reportedly not signaling a clear intent to participate in the escort mission, citing the risks amid the ongoing military conflict.
