U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking military support from allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global crude oil shipments, but major countries are taking a cautious approach.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 16th (local time), Germany said it would not take part in the operation, while Japan and Australia were also reported to have signaled that they were unlikely to dispatch warships. The United Kingdom and France are reviewing whether to participate, but have not made any specific decisions as hostilities have yet to end.

On the day, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius dismissed the prospect of joining, saying of Trump’s request, “With the powerful U.S. Navy already deployed, what more could a handful of European warships do?” He added, “This is not our war, and we did not start it.”

Trump is currently publicly pressuring allies to cooperate. He warned reporters over the weekend that countries that do not join the operation to open the Strait of Hormuz: “We will remember this.”

In an interview with the Financial Times, he also said that if NATO allies do not cooperate, “it will be very bad for the future of the alliance.”
