The Donald Trump administration is reportedly reviewing options to seize or blockade Kharg Island, Iran’s key crude oil export hub.

On the 20th (KST), Axios cited multiple sources familiar with the matter, reporting that the U.S. government is discussing such plans to pressure Iran to resume transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Kharg Island is regarded as a strategic hub handling about 90% of Iran’s crude exports.

Within the White House, there has also been talk of conducting preliminary operations to degrade Iran’s military capabilities before carrying out such a mission. One source said it was “a plan to further weaken Iran and then take control of the island to secure leverage in negotiations.”

A senior U.S. administration official said, “President Trump wants the Strait of Hormuz opened, and if necessary, seizing Kharg Island could be an option,” while adding, “No final decision has been made yet.”
