Ruling and opposition lawmakers on digital asset policy bodies hold only ‘small’ crypto positions

Most lawmakers serving on key ruling and opposition bodies that discuss digital asset policy at the National Assembly do not hold virtual assets (cryptocurrencies), disclosures showed.

According to lawmakers’ asset-change filings released on the 26th, many members of the Democratic Party of Korea’s Digital Asset TF were found to have no digital asset holdings for themselves or their families.

TF Chair Lee Jung-moon, a Democratic Party lawmaker, was confirmed to hold no digital assets, and TF Secretary Ahn Do-geol also reported no digital assets in his own name. In Ahn’s case, however, his eldest and second sons reported holding about 20 million won worth of digital assets, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

Lawmakers Kang Jun-hyun, Min Byung-deok and Park Min-gyu of the Democratic Party also reported no digital asset holdings. Rep. Kim Hyun-jung, meanwhile, sold all digital assets previously held by her second son, leaving the current balance at 0 won.

Rep. Lee Ju-hee reported that her mother newly purchased XRP worth about 1 million won.

The situation is not markedly different among members of the People Power Party’s “Stock and Digital Asset Value-Up Special Committee.”

Rep. Kim Sang-hoon, chair of the committee, reported that his spouse holds several digital assets including XRP, but the amount totaled only 6 million won.

Rep. Kim Jae-seop reported holding about 2 million won worth of the stablecoins USDC and Tether (USDT), digital assets pegged to fiat currencies.

Reps. Ko Dong-jin, Kim Eun-hye and Choi Bo-yoon reported no digital asset holdings.
