Coinbase is introducing a usage-based billing model for AI compute requests on its x402 protocol, allowing charges to reflect actual consumption.
Cointelegraph reported on April 10 that Coinbase Developer Platform said on X, formerly Twitter, that it had added an "Upto" feature to x402.
Previously, the x402 protocol charged the same fee regardless of request type. That meant simple tasks could be overpriced, while more complex tasks could be undercharged.
Under the update, users can set the maximum amount they are willing to pay before a task starts and will then be charged only for what they use.
