Iran plans to formally raise what it sees as U.S. breaches of prior commitments with Pakistan, which has been mediating talks related to Washington.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported on July 11 that an Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf would meet Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad later that day. The talks are set to focus on whether the U.S. has carried out terms of a ceasefire agreement.
The meeting was scheduled for after noon in Islamabad. Iran plans to tell Sharif that issues previously presented as part of the ceasefire agreement have not been sufficiently implemented, and that fulfilling them remains a precondition for starting negotiations.
Iran had previously set the unfreezing of assets and a ceasefire in Lebanon as conditions for opening talks with the U.S.
Tasnim also reported that Iran had voiced strong dissatisfaction a day earlier over Washington’s failure to honor its commitments. Shortly after arriving in Islamabad, the Iranian delegation met with Pakistan’s military commander and strongly protested what it described as broken promises in the early stage of the negotiation process. The delegation also argued that although Pakistan had conveyed the U.S. willingness to accept the conditions, actual implementation had not taken place.
Tasnim said that if dialogue between Iran and the U.S. goes ahead, negotiations would begin on the evening of July 11 and last one day.
