President Donald Trump declared a maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after talks with Iran collapsed, and the U.S. military said it will begin enforcing the measure on April 13.

U.S. Central Command said April 12 that, under Trump's order, it will block all maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports starting at 10 a.m. Eastern time on April 13. That is 11 p.m. in South Korea on April 13.

The measure covers Iranian ports across the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It applies equally to vessels of all nationalities traveling to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas.

Earlier that day, Trump wrote on Truth Social that "the only thing that matters is that Iran refuses to give up its nuclear ambitions." He said the U.S. Navy would immediately begin procedures to block all ships entering and leaving the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump also said Iran's refusal to keep the waterway open while insisting on laying naval mines amounted to "global extortion." "No country will be extorted," he wrote.

He also warned that ships paying what he called "illegal tolls" to Iran would not be guaranteed safe passage on the high seas.

The move could further escalate tensions in the Middle East and affect global energy supply chains and financial markets.
