Middle East tensions are rising again after Iranian authorities warned they still have additional ways to respond to a US maritime blockade.

Walter Bloomberg reported on April 12 that a senior Iranian official said Iran "still has leverage it has not yet used," signaling possible retaliation against the US maritime blockade.

The comments came after the US moved to control traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. They were interpreted as leaving open the possibility of additional military and non-military responses.

Earlier, US Central Command said that under a presidential proclamation it would block all maritime traffic entering or leaving Iranian ports starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on April 13.

The US measure applies to Iranian ports across the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It will also apply equally to vessels of all countries traveling to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas.
