Bitcoin futures open interest has turned lower after a wave of liquidations last week, suggesting the market is entering a more stable phase as leverage comes out of the system. Open interest refers to outstanding futures positions that have not yet been closed.

In a report published April 20, CryptoQuant contributor Axel Adler Jr. wrote that about $526 million of short positions and $213 million of long positions were liquidated on April 17 alone. Since then, market-wide open interest has been trending lower.

Bitcoin futures open interest rose sharply between April 8 and April 14, reaching about 307,000 contracts on April 14. It then climbed to a peak of 319,000 on April 17 before falling to about 293,000 as of April 20.

That points to a stabilizing market. Adler wrote that if open interest had held steady or continued to rise after the liquidations, it could have signaled overheating. Instead, the move looks more like a normal correction as leverage is flushed out.

As crowded positions are cleared, market structure is returning to a healthier state, he added. Adler also said it will be important to watch whether open interest begins rising again as Bitcoin attempts to break through key price resistance levels.
