President Donald Trump said on April 20 that a US negotiating team led by Vice President JD Vance would arrive in Islamabad within hours.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said the US would proceed with talks. “Nobody is playing games at this point,” he said.
Trump said the high-level delegation includes Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, and is already heading to Islamabad. “They’re traveling now and will arrive tonight, Pakistan time,” he said.
He also left open the possibility of meeting Iran’s leadership directly if the negotiations advance. “If they want to, I’m willing to meet,” Trump said. He added that capable people are involved in the talks, but said he has no problem meeting in person.
Trump again stressed that a central condition of any negotiations is that Iran give up developing nuclear weapons. “That’s what this is all about — giving up nuclear weapons,” he said. “Nuclear weapons will never be allowed.”
