The White House may soon announce additional steps tied to the U.S. government’s effort to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
Patrick Witt, executive director of the President’s Council of Advisers for Digital Assets, said at the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas that a major announcement on the initiative could come in the next few weeks, according to an April 27 report by The Block.
Witt said the administration has been working on the legal interpretation and operating framework needed to institutionalize the reserve since President Donald Trump signed an executive order last year creating a strategic Bitcoin stockpile. He added that the government is also working to protect digital assets it already holds, including Bitcoin.
The reserve would be built with Bitcoin the government has obtained through criminal and civil forfeitures. Officials are also pursuing a separate reserve framework for other digital assets.
Because an executive order is less durable than legislation, Congress is also working to codify the policy. The BITCOIN Act, introduced by Senator Cynthia Lummis and Representative Nick Begich, calls for acquiring as much as 1 million BTC over the next five years on a budget-neutral basis.
The bill was recently renamed the American Reserves Modernization Act, or ARMA, the report said.
Witt also signaled the administration could make meaningful progress within weeks, pointing to the possibility of a policy announcement.
