President Donald Trump and his national security team are skeptical of Iran’s latest negotiating proposal, the Wall Street Journal reported on April 27.
Trump did not immediately reject the offer, which called for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and delaying nuclear talks. But he questioned whether Tehran was negotiating in good faith.
He was particularly doubtful that Iran was willing to meet Washington’s core demands to stop uranium enrichment and forgo nuclear weapons development.
The U.S. plans to keep talks going. The White House could outline its response to Iran’s proposal and its broader position within days.
Trump has also signaled that military action could resume if the negotiations end without results. Even so, some within the administration appear to favor avoiding a renewed conflict.
The White House also dismissed the notion of conducting negotiations through media reports. Spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the U.S. does not negotiate through the press and that anything not officially announced by the president or the White House should be treated as speculation.
