President Donald Trump has instructed his aides to prepare for a prolonged blockade of Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported on April 28.

In recent discussions, including at a White House Situation Room meeting, Trump chose to maintain a blockade strategy aimed at cutting off Iran’s oil exports and maritime logistics, the Journal reported. The move is designed to pressure Iran’s economy and force Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

Trump viewed maintaining the blockade as less risky than resuming military strikes or breaking off negotiations. Still, a prolonged blockade would bring side effects, including higher oil prices and increased political costs. Vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has already fallen to its lowest level since the war began.

After the ceasefire in early April, Trump eased some military tensions and left open the possibility of a diplomatic solution. But he has maintained his core demand for the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program.

The Journal said Trump also questioned Iran’s sincerity in negotiations after Tehran proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz first and putting nuclear talks on a lower priority.

The U.S. appears set to maintain the long-term blockade while continuing to press Iran in nuclear negotiations.
