South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb said on April 30 that it is pursuing a security framework based on post-quantum cryptography, or PQC, to counter future threats including hacking attacks powered by quantum computers.

Post-quantum cryptography is a next-generation encryption technology designed to remain secure even in a quantum computing environment that could undermine existing cryptographic systems. With advances in quantum computing accelerating and concerns growing over vulnerabilities in current encryption methods, Bithumb has been reviewing the technology's adoption as a preemptive step.

As part of that effort, the exchange has been discussing ways to apply PQC solutions across its platform through a partnership formed in February with security company Aton. The project is focused on applying quantum security technology to cryptocurrency wallet management and user authentication systems.

Bithumb plans to strengthen security across the entire lifecycle of private keys, a core element of asset protection, covering input, authentication, transmission and storage. Using Aton's user and device authentication technology and end-to-end encryption, it aims to build a security environment tailored to its service structure while tightening controls over customer data and access paths to assets.

The exchange is also upgrading its monitoring system to detect suspicious transactions in real time. Its strategy is to strengthen both technical and operational response systems with potential attacks using quantum computers in mind.

Reducing security concerns around virtual assets and safely protecting assets in a changing technological environment are key priorities, a Bithumb official said. The company added that it aims to establish a top-tier domestic security standard and provide a trusted trading environment.
