President Donald Trump said the US will help foreign ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz leave the waterway, while also signaling that talks with Iran are progressing positively.
Writing on Truth Social on May 3, Trump said several countries not directly involved in the Middle East conflict had asked the US to help ensure the safety of their vessels. He said the US plans to assist those ships in leaving the strait under an initiative he called "Project Freedom," which is set to begin on the morning of May 4, Middle East time.
Trump said many vessels currently in and around the Strait of Hormuz are facing shortages of food and other essential supplies, describing the measure as humanitarian. "Countries, companies and sailors that did nothing wrong are becoming victims of the situation," he wrote.
He also said a US delegation is engaged in "very positive" discussions with Iran, pointing to the possibility of a diplomatic solution. He did not provide further details.
Trump added that the US could respond forcefully if the movement of ships is obstructed.
