Summary

  • NEAR Protocol’s Near One said a new ownership verification system should be built to prepare for the possibility that wallet private keys are exposed in a quantum attack.
  • Near One presented zero-knowledge proofs as a solution and said it plans to introduce the quantum-resistant signature system FIPS-204 to its Layer 1 blockchain and launch it on testnet by the end of the second quarter.
  • According to the report, the Ethereum Foundation has formed a dedicated team to build a protocol-level quantum-response solution by 2029, while the Solana and Bitcoin communities are also reviewing related technologies and rolling out test versions.

Concerns are growing that advances in quantum computing could render blockchain cryptography ineffective, underscoring the need for safeguards that would allow users to quickly prove ownership when assets are stolen.

Near One, the research and development arm of Layer 1 blockchain NEAR Protocol, says blockchains need a new ownership-verification system in case wallet private keys are exposed in a quantum attack, according to a May 7 Cointelegraph report.

“If quantum attacks become a reality, it will be difficult to verify whether the person executing a transaction is the actual owner of the assets,” Anton Astafiev, Near One’s chief technology officer, said. Blockchain protocols would then face a difficult decision: freeze compromised wallets or leave them operating in what he described as a lawless zone.

Astafiev proposed zero-knowledge proofs as a solution. The technology allows users to prove they possess certain information without revealing the sensitive data itself.

Near One plans to introduce FIPS-204, a quantum-resistant signature system, to its Layer 1 blockchain and launch it on a testnet by the end of the second quarter.
