President Donald Trump said Iran’s response to a US proposal to end the war was unacceptable, ratcheting up tensions in negotiations between the two countries.
On May 10, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had "just read Iran’s response to the so-called ‘delegation’ proposal." He added: "I don’t like it. It is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE."
The US had earlier sent Iran a proposal aimed at ending the war. Axios reported the two sides were close to reaching a one-page memorandum of understanding, with key terms including a long-term suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment and guarantees of free passage for international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s official response was delivered to the US through Pakistan, which is serving as a mediator. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that Tehran had conveyed its position via Pakistan. Trump had said on May 8 that he would receive a letter, suggesting it was delivered about two days later.
Trump did not elaborate on whether talks would continue or how a ceasefire would be maintained.
The two countries remain in a military standoff over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has suggested it could block the waterway, while the US has increased pressure for a maritime blockade.
