President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed cooperation at their first summit, signaling optimism about improving US-China relations.
Trump said in remarks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 13 that relations between the US and China would become better than ever before, according to Bloomberg. He also described Xi as a "great leader."
Xi struck a similar tone, saying the US and China should be partners rather than rivals. He said the two countries should help each other succeed and prosper together.
He added that major powers in a new era must find the right way to coexist.
The meeting marked the first visit to China by a sitting US president in about a decade. The two leaders began formal talks at the Great Hall of the People, near Tiananmen Square, after an honor guard inspection and welcome ceremony.
Trump also mentioned members of the business delegation, including Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang and Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk.
He said US business leaders had come to show respect for China and Xi. They are seeking to expand trade and business with China, he said, and the US would also cooperate on the basis of full reciprocity.
