President Donald Trump is holding off on any immediate decision on additional military action against Iran to give diplomatic efforts more time, the Wall Street Journal reported on May 23, citing multiple people familiar with the matter.

Trump met with his national security advisers on May 23 to discuss options for responding to Iran, according to the report. He did not authorize an immediate strike.

Mediators between the US and Iran are working on a limited agreement to extend a ceasefire and establish a framework for follow-up talks. Pakistan and Qatar are among those involved in the mediation. The US is seeking a halt to uranium enrichment, while Iran is demanding sanctions relief and the removal of controls over the Strait of Hormuz, the Journal said.

Military action remains on the table if the talks fail. The Journal reported that the US and Israel could carry out limited airstrikes within days against Iranian targets, including energy facilities, if negotiations collapse. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, has warned that any further attack could broaden the conflict across the Middle East.
