President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran to extend a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached next week.

Trump made the remarks in a phone interview with ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl on June 1. “Things look good,” he said. “I think we’ll have a deal within the next week.”

He said there had been “a small problem” earlier in the day, but that it was resolved quickly, referring to Iran’s recent objection to an Israeli strike in Lebanon.

Trump said he spoke with Hezbollah and told the group not to fire. He also said he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asked him to stop the attack. “Both sides stopped shooting,” he said.

A peace deal with Iran could prove more valuable than a military victory, Trump said.

He added that some issues still remain before a final agreement is reached.

Speaking about a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said there were still several matters that needed to be secured. That was why he had not yet signed the agreement, he said.

Trump added that the negotiations were not easy because they involved “a very large country,” but said “we are getting the things we need.”
