"Korea Investment Securities' investment in Coinone is not a simple financial investment but a strategic one. We made the investment to help connect institutional finance and the virtual-asset, or cryptocurrency, market."

Kim Sung-hwan, chief executive officer of Korea Investment Securities, made the remarks at a press briefing held at Coinone's office in Yeouido's Parc.1 Tower in Seoul on June 4.

The move underscores the growing convergence of the virtual-asset market and traditional finance. In the US, traditional assets such as stocks, bonds and funds are already being digitized, Kim said. Companies that fail to get ahead of that shift risk falling behind as the market changes.

Kim said the company chose Coinone for its growth potential and security capabilities rather than its market share. Korea Investment Securities could have selected a larger exchange such as Upbit or Bithumb, but it did not focus solely on scale. Instead, it placed greater value on Coinone's security and compliance capabilities.

He also highlighted potential synergies from cooperation among major shareholders including OKX, Com2uS and Korea Investment Securities. Combining the technological strengths of a global exchange, South Korea's gaming industry and the Korean capital market would help the company stay ahead of market changes, he added.
