The US military has begun defensive airstrikes against Iran in response to the downing of a US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter.

US Central Command said in a statement on June 9 that it started the self-defense strikes against Iran at 5 p.m. Eastern time.

CENTCOM said the operation was launched in response to the Apache helicopter being shot down a day earlier. It called the strikes a proportional response to an unprovoked Iranian attack.

Earlier, a US Apache helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, and President Donald Trump said Iran had shot it down. Both pilots were rescued and there were no casualties.

Shortly after the incident, Trump said the US had to respond, signaling retaliatory action.
