Visa laid out plans to expand its stablecoin business, saying the technology is reshaping payments infrastructure.

At the company’s annual payments forum, Chief Product and Strategy Officer Jack Forestell said artificial intelligence is changing the front end of commerce, while stablecoins are remaking the back end, according to The Block on June 11. He said Visa’s role is to help ensure the system is secure, reliable and able to operate at global scale.

Visa said it is expanding stablecoin settlement experiments across multiple regions, blockchains and currencies. The company has processed billions of dollars of stablecoin transactions through VisaNet to date, and its annualized settlement volume stood at $7 billion as of March.

The company also plans to build infrastructure for tokenized deposits, allowing banks to convert deposits into programmable digital assets. That would enable banks to keep deposits on their own balance sheets while using them as a form of digital money that operates around the clock.

In a separate announcement the same day, Visa disclosed a partnership with OpenAI. The companies plan to build an environment in which AI agents can make Visa payments based on user-set spending limits and approval conditions.

Visa said payments initiated by AI agents would also use tokenized Visa credentials, real-time authorization and fraud-detection features. The company added that the system could later expand to a range of AI services, including workflows and conversational commerce.
