The US is stepping up pressure on Iran. After President Donald Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also struck a hard-line tone toward Tehran.

On June 11, Bessent wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that "the Iranian regime is going to lose its zero-sum game eventually."

He said the damage Iran inflicted on US allies in the Gulf region would be paid for with funds recovered from Iranian accounts. Transit fees paid to the Persian Gulf Strait Administration, or PGSA, would also be offset with money recovered from the agency's accounts.

"Every attack Iran carries out only deepens the economic and financial consequences it will face," Bessent wrote, signaling the possibility of additional pressure.

The remarks came shortly after Trump said the same day that the US would "hit Iran very hard tonight," raising the prospect of military action against Tehran. The US government is also moving to increase economic pressure through financial sanctions and asset seizures alongside a military response.
