The cryptocurrency industry must do more than champion decentralization if it is to reach its next phase of growth, and should more fully adopt the centralized infrastructure used in traditional financial markets, CoinDesk reported on June 13, citing an interview with LMAX Group Chief Executive Officer David Mercer.

"Centralization solves coordination problems," Mercer said. "Buyers and sellers get the best price when they participate in a single central market." LMAX Group is a UK-based operator of institutional exchanges.

Mercer said the crypto industry has promoted decentralization as a core value for years, but in practice markets have depended on trusted exchanges, governance frameworks and settlement mechanisms during times of stress. He added that crypto should learn from the organized capital markets that have developed over centuries.

He identified credit, clearing and collateral systems as core strengths of traditional finance. The global economy and capital markets run on credit relationships, clearing brokers and prime brokerage networks, he said, adding that digital-asset markets still fall short in those areas.

Mercer also praised blockchain's speed of settlement and transparency, but said important gaps remain. Finance today operates on leverage and credit, and will continue to do so, he added.

Mercer pointed to the digital-asset market's fragmented regulatory and operating structures as a major problem, saying they prevent collateral from moving efficiently across separate systems. Digital money such as stablecoins and tokenized assets will ultimately enable much more efficient collateral management, he said.
