Voice-Phishing Proceeds Sent to Overseas Crypto Exchange, Seoul Police Assign Dedicated Team

Police have launched a full investigation into the case of a mother and son who died after falling victim to voice phishing. Investigators are tracing the money after confirming the stolen funds passed through an overseas cryptocurrency exchange, KBS reported.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said in a notice to reporters on June 23 that it would transfer the case to a voice-phishing unit within its Metropolitan Investigation Division.
The case was filed with Seoul's Geumcheon Police Station on June 6. The agency decided to hand it to the Metropolitan Investigation Division to speed up the investigation.
Police said all of the stolen funds were transferred through an overseas cryptocurrency exchange to an unidentified electronic wallet, and investigators are tracking the route of the transfers.
On June 20, a woman in her 50s and her son in his 20s were found dead in an apartment in Eumseong County, North Chungcheong Province. A note found at the scene indicated they had been suffering after becoming victims of voice phishing.
