President Donald Trump’s plan to devote substantial government resources to quantum computing and quantum security could ultimately benefit cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, according to industry participants.

The Block reported on June 23 that Alex Pruden, chief executive officer of Project Eleven, said the executive orders do not address Bitcoin directly. Still, he said, they could accelerate the development and adoption of post-quantum cryptography, or PQC. That would also support the blockchain industry’s broader transition to quantum-safe security, including for Bitcoin.

The key point, he added, is that the US government has committed both money and time to meeting its quantum security goals.

Trump previously signed two executive orders, “Protecting Americans From Advanced Cryptographic Attacks” (EO 14409) and “Leading the World in Quantum Innovation” (EO 14411). The measures are intended to strengthen US competitiveness in quantum computing and speed adoption of next-generation cryptographic systems.

EO 14409 in particular requires the federal government’s core systems and critical assets to adopt quantum-resistant key exchange systems by 2030 and quantum-resistant digital signature systems by 2031. It also requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology to complete a PQC transition pilot program by the end of 2027.

Pruden said the measures are notable because they expand PQC adoption requirements beyond federal agencies to government contractors more broadly. Previously, the focus was on phasing out legacy cryptographic systems by 2035. This time, the timeline for adopting PQC is more clearly defined, he said.

Concern has been growing in the crypto industry that quantum computers could threaten the cryptographic foundations of Bitcoin and other blockchains. Major projects including the Ethereum Foundation and the Solana Foundation are researching quantum-resistant security technologies, and the Bitcoin community is also actively discussing possible responses.
