Kyobo Life Insurance said on June 24 that it had confirmed the technical feasibility of using a Korean won stablecoin to collect insurance premiums and pay claims.
The company recently shared the results of a proof-of-concept for a Korean won stablecoin-based payment and payout system at its headquarters in Seoul's Gwanghwamun district with blockchain infrastructure firm EQBR. The two companies also completed related tests successfully.
The demonstration showed customers using Korean won stablecoins held in digital wallets to pay insurance premiums automatically, with transaction data reflected in Kyobo Life's internal systems in real time. The companies focused on whether a blockchain network could be linked with existing insurance operations systems.
Kyobo Life said the test confirmed the potential to connect traditional financial systems with blockchain-based payment infrastructure. If the relevant laws and regulations are put in place, the company expects the system to improve the efficiency and transparency of premium payments and claim payouts.
"The legal and institutional framework for Korean won stablecoins is moving more slowly than expected, but we are using this time to prepare the technology and business model in advance," Park Jin-ho, a vice president at Kyobo Life, said. "Through additional verification, we plan to develop practical use cases and continue expanding the potential application of the technology to insurance services."
