Adrian Boafo, a pro-crypto Democrat, won the Democratic primary in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District.
Eleanor Terrett, host of CryptoAmerica, reported on June 23 that Boafo secured the nomination in the race to succeed Representative Steny Hoyer, who is retiring.
Protect Progress, an affiliate of crypto industry political action committee Fairshake, spent about $5.5 million to support Boafo in the contest.
In a statement issued shortly after the result was announced, Protect Progress said it had backed Boafo aggressively from the start and helped lift him from the fifth tier of candidates into a contender for Congress. The group added that he would be one of the key leaders in what it called the most pro-crypto Congress in history.
The crypto industry has recently expanded its support for pro-crypto candidates in US midterm and primary elections. Fairshake in particular has focused on creating a legislative environment favorable to the industry through large political spending.
