Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a roadmap for the network’s future development called “Lean Ethereum.”
In a post on X on July 5, Buterin wrote that Ethereum researchers met in Berlin two weeks earlier to discuss the project’s long-term direction and released the Lean Ethereum roadmap.
He described Lean Ethereum as Ethereum’s third major upgrade, to be introduced in stages over the next three to four years. “If the Merge was the second evolution, Lean Ethereum is the next step,” Buterin wrote. “Nearly every core part of the protocol will change.”
The roadmap includes improvements to transaction verification to boost processing efficiency, cryptography designed to remain secure against quantum computers, and a new consensus structure aimed at accelerating transaction processing. It also calls for simplifying the network’s architecture and making it easier to maintain over the long term.
Improving scalability and strengthening privacy are also core priorities for Lean Ethereum.
