Iran has suspended its obligations under a memorandum of understanding with the US, accusing Washington of violating the pact.

Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, said the US had breached its obligations under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding through “aggressive actions” and had stopped implementing it, according to Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency on July 18. Iran has accordingly halted all of its own obligations under the MOU and is not currently implementing any of its provisions.

Asked whether the US had recently contacted Iran to resume talks, Gharibabadi said the two sides had been in negotiations but Washington chose aggressive action instead. He added that the US should by now have realized it could gain nothing through attacks and, if it is wise, should choose a path other than war.

He also said Iran’s current policy is to defend the country firmly and teach aggressors a lesson. Iran will continue defending itself against US actions, he added.
