The US Securities and Exchange Commission will hold a public roundtable in September to discuss moving the stock market toward 24-hour trading.

Cointelegraph reported on July 24 that the SEC will host the roundtable on Sept. 17 at its Washington, D.C., headquarters. The event will focus on expanding overnight trading in the US stock market. Participants will discuss what is needed to support overnight trading, as well as operating frameworks and market stability measures for a 24-hour market.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins said US equity markets are entering "a new day and night." He added that broader overnight trading could help US markets keep pace with markets where continuous trading is already available.

The roundtable comes as global exchanges roll out or plan trading services that run close to 24 hours a day. The London Stock Exchange is reportedly considering launching an overnight trading platform in early 2027, while Nasdaq said in March that it had started talks with US regulators on introducing 24-hour trading five days a week. Nasdaq is targeting a launch in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approval.
