Nvidia is discussing providing about $250 billion in guarantees to support OpenAI’s lease of computing capacity from a massive data center project, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal reported July 26 that Nvidia is in talks to provide OpenAI with roughly $250 billion in guarantees tied to a 10-gigawatt data center hub that SoftBank Group is developing in Ohio.

The project could require about $500 billion in investment. SoftBank Group Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Son had previously put the project’s estimated cost at that level.

If Nvidia provides the guarantees, SoftBank could use them to raise additional funding for construction of the data center. OpenAI has spent weeks negotiating to lease computing capacity at the site, the report said.

The talks underscore how data center investment, financing and computing demand are increasingly intertwined in the AI industry. Major technology companies including Nvidia help support funding for AI infrastructure, while computing demand generated by that infrastructure feeds back into their businesses.
