US, Saudi Forces Launch Joint Airstrikes in Iraq Against Iran-Backed Militias

US and Saudi forces carried out joint airstrikes in Iraq targeting Iran-backed militias that attacked US troops and Saudi energy facilities.

US Central Command said on July 28 that US and Saudi forces conducted precision strikes in eastern Iraq against Iran-backed militias operating under the direction of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC.

The two countries’ warplanes hit multiple militia logistics and weapons facilities in eastern Iraq. Central Command said the strikes were in response to more than 30 drone attacks over the previous 72 hours carried out at the IRGC’s direction.

Central Command said Iranian attacks targeting US forces had failed. It added that Iran-backed militias in Iraq had attempted more than 600 attacks on Americans and US facilities from February through April.

“The IRGC and its proxy forces must cease attacks to avoid further US military response,” Central Command said.
