Russia is expanding the areas where cryptocurrency mining is banned, with Moscow now included among the restricted regions.
Cointelegraph reported on August 1 that the Russian government added Moscow, Moscow Oblast and parts of Kursk Oblast to the list of areas subject to cryptocurrency mining restrictions under Resolution No. 936, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25. The measure will take effect on August 15 and remain in force through December 31, 2032.
The resolution broadens mining curbs first announced in December 2025. In Kursk Oblast, eight municipalities, including Lgovsky, were also added to the ban. Russia had already restricted mining in several regions, including the Republic of Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai, citing electricity shortages. Those measures are set to remain in place through March 2031.
The Russian government cited surging electricity demand as the reason for the latest move. The Energy Ministry of Moscow Oblast said mining restrictions were needed as strain on the power grid intensified.
According to Hashrate Index, Russia accounted for about 17.2% of global Bitcoin hashrate in the third quarter, making it the world's second-largest Bitcoin mining country.
