Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin swap service, has suspended operations after a surge in AI-driven attempts to penetrate its infrastructure.
Cointelegraph reported on August 4 that Boltz announced on X it would halt the service until further notice. The company said automated, AI-based intrusion attempts have risen steadily this year.
Boltz said it had faced multiple exploit attempts in recent months and had avoided losses each time. But it said the pattern was clear: attackers were adapting their methods faster than the team could identify and patch vulnerabilities. The attacks accelerated sharply in recent days, it added, and the company does not expect that imbalance to reverse.
After reviewing the results of its internal security checks, Boltz concluded it could not responsibly resume operations while it remained the target of what it described as multiple well-resourced attack groups.
Michael Coté, chief information security officer at the Solana Foundation, told Cointelegraph in a July interview that humans cannot scale enough to meet the threat. The only solution, he said, is autonomous defense systems operating at machine speed.
Boltz said no user assets were affected. All swaps on the platform are non-custodial and rely on advanced cryptographic technology, allowing users to retain direct control of their assets throughout the process. Its refund API and customer support will remain available.
