Sen. Elizabeth Warren has asked the US government to explain whether United Arab Emirates investments tied to the Trump family’s cryptocurrency ventures are linked to US policy on AI chip exports to the Gulf state.

Cointelegraph reported on August 5 that Warren sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick seeking an explanation for the easing of AI chip export restrictions on the UAE. The letter specifically cited two investment links between the UAE and the Trump family’s crypto businesses.

The first was a $500 million investment in January by an Abu Dhabi institution backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan in World Liberty Financial, or WLFI, a crypto project tied to the Trump family. The second was a $2 billion investment in Binance by a UAE-linked company that used World Liberty Financial’s stablecoin, USD1, as the payment method.

In the letter, Warren wrote that the Commerce Department’s actions raise serious questions about whether the president’s financial interests in cryptocurrency businesses may be influencing agency operations and national security.

The Commerce Department recently reclassified the UAE into the “A:5 country group,” broadening its access to license-free exports, including advanced semiconductors. It also said it would prioritize review of chip- and server-related license applications from MGX, the UAE sovereign wealth fund that carried out the $2 billion Binance investment.

Democratic lawmakers have scrutinized the UAE before. A group of senators, including Warren, called in June for a hearing on the $500 million investment in World Liberty Financial. Several lawmakers are also continuing to investigate President Donald Trump’s pardon of former Binance Chief Executive Officer Changpeng Zhao.
