IMF Says Local-Currency Stablecoins Could Spur Adoption of Dollar Tokens

The introduction of stablecoins backed by domestic currencies could end up boosting demand for dollar-pegged stablecoins, the International Monetary Fund said.

Cointelegraph reported on August 8 that IMF First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath said in a speech in South Africa on August 7 that local-currency stablecoins could instead accelerate the adoption of dollar stablecoins.

As country-specific stablecoins are introduced and begin trading on-chain, exchanging them for dollar stablecoins may become easier. That could shift foreign-exchange trading from traditional banks and FX dealers to on-chain markets, making it harder for authorities to monitor or manage capital flows.

The view reflects the possibility that users may favor dollar stablecoins over tokens tied to their own currencies. Dollar stablecoins offer deeper liquidity, stronger network effects and broader use across platforms and borders, giving users an incentive to choose them over local-currency stablecoins.

The impact of stablecoins could also differ depending on a country's economic conditions. In countries where dollar use is already high, stablecoins may simply replace existing ways of holding dollars. In economies with limited access to dollars and weaker fundamentals, they could increase demand for foreign currency itself.
