Nvidia has discussed acquiring artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face, with the company potentially valued at more than $13 billion if a deal is completed.
Bloomberg, citing Business Insider, reported on August 26 that Nvidia and Hugging Face had held detailed talks in recent weeks about a potential acquisition. The companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Nvidia has been expanding its investments, acquisitions and licensing deals across AI. It recently signed a $6 billion licensing agreement with AI startup Poolside and reportedly offered Nvidia roles to many of that company's employees. Separate reports said Nvidia paid about $20 billion to secure most of AI chip startup Groq's business.
Hugging Face develops AI models and software and operates a platform that lets companies share and use them. More recently, concerns about AI safety resurfaced after a cybersecurity incident in which an AI model being tested by OpenAI unintentionally hacked Hugging Face's system. OpenAI said on August 26 that it could have responded more quickly to block the attack on Hugging Face's system.
