California Legislature Passes Bill Barring Public Officials From Issuing Meme Coins

California’s legislature has passed a bill that would bar public officials from issuing meme coins. The measure now goes to the governor for final approval.

Bitcoin.com and other outlets reported on Aug. 28 that California lawmakers approved AB 2409, which would restrict public officials from issuing meme coins. The bill passed both the Assembly and the Senate, and the Assembly later approved the Senate’s amendments in a 78-0 vote.

The bill would prohibit federal, state and local government officials from issuing meme coins either directly or in cooperation with third parties. It would also ban digital-asset service providers from listing or selling to California residents any meme coins issued by public officials, or launched in cooperation with them, on or after Jan. 1, 2027.
