U.S. Central Command said on September 5 in a post on X that it struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to an attack by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC.
CENTCOM said it completely disabled the IRGC oil tankers Downey and Stark off the coast of Kharg Island. It also said Kylos was completely destroyed.
The command had earlier said the IRGC fired ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy ships.
Gen. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, said the message to the IRGC was clear: If it attacks U.S. forces, the United States will impose a greater economic cost by removing its vessels.
He added that the U.S. would not hesitate to defend its forces and, if necessary, would destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil transport fleet.
