Hunter Biden Details Rationale, Plans for Meme Coin 'LAPTOP,' Including 20% Community Airdrop

Hunter Biden, the son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, has laid out the rationale for launching the meme coin LAPTOP and detailed its token distribution plan.

In a post on X on Sept. 8, Biden said he was launching LAPTOP after turning “the symbol they used to try to end me” into a symbol of recovery and comeback.

The name LAPTOP is drawn from the so-called Hunter Biden laptop controversy that emerged ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. “They weaponized the laptop, but I turned it into a token,” he wrote.

Twenty percent of the token supply will be distributed through a community airdrop. That will include some users who lost money investing in Official Trump (TRUMP), the meme coin tied to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Another 30% of the total supply will be handled under a pre-set structure tied to specific conditions. If the real-world conditions disclosed by Hunter Biden’s team are met, those tokens will be permanently burned. If not, they will be donated to charity. Separately, 50 million LAPTOP tokens have been allocated for charitable purposes.

Biden also sought to distance the token from speculative expectations surrounding meme coins. He said investors should not expect him or anyone else to increase the token’s value and stressed that LAPTOP’s purpose is not simply to be held.

He also directly mentioned TRUMP, claiming that about 1 million wallets had posted combined losses of about $3.8 billion on the token.

LAPTOP is scheduled for an official launch on the Base network on Sept. 9.
