A researcher who recently left Google DeepMind after working on artificial intelligence safety warned that the current course of AI development could pose a serious threat to humanity.
Bilal Chughtai, a former Google DeepMind researcher, wrote on X and LinkedIn on Sept. 14 that he had witnessed AI development firsthand at Google and was deeply concerned about the direction of the technology, Bloomberg reported. “I sincerely believe AI has the potential to kill us all,” he wrote.
Chughtai studied AI safety and alignment at DeepMind and said there is still a chance to develop AI safely. He now works on AI safety at the nonprofit BlueDot Impact.
Warnings about the development of advanced AI models have been mounting across the industry. Earlier in September, Jacob Coxon, who had worked at Anthropic and OpenAI, criticized AI companies as he left, saying they were “gambling with our lives” in a race to build superintelligent AI.
Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei also said last weekend that the pace of advanced AI development should slow to reduce the risk of the technology escaping human control. OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also expressed agreement with Amodei’s concerns.
